Barber Lee Moonshine is white whiskey straight from the still at Barber Lee Spirits, the small distillery that Michael Barber and Lorraine Lee run in downtown Petaluma, California, best known for its absinthe and its single malt rye. This moonshine is made from a malted rye mash and bottled unaged at 100 proof, the same spirit that would become Barber Lee's rye whiskey if it went into a barrel.Everything comes off the still clear; the color in whiskey comes from the barrel. Skipping the wood shows the distillate itself, and Barber Lee's is full bodied with a light sweetness and notes of almond and light baking spice from the malted rye. The distillery suggests it as a rich substitute for vodka or gin, and it makes a surprisingly good white Manhattan or a rye-forward Moscow Mule, in addition to sipping cold the way moonshine is meant to be.
